Amberg to Bayreuth

Thinking overnight that Amberg must be one of the hidden gem’s of Bavaria. And, we weren’t finished yet!
After we had got ourselves ready to face another hot day (and another church!), we took the advise of the lovely lady in the tourist office and drove up the hill above Amberg and visited the Mariahilfbergkirche.

This baroque Franciscan monastery is situated on the “Hill of Our Lady Help of Christians” (Mariahilfberg) above the town. This hill was given its name during the bubonic plague in the Thirty Years' War in 1633/4 when the locals prayed to the Virgin Mary to rid them of the plague, with the promise, if they survived, then a church would be built as thanks to Mary. Obviously many survived the war and the plague,  and the beautiful church we see today is the outcome.

From the top of the hill we had an outstanding view across the town.

We left Amberg as the day was warming up, an unusual spell of weather from what the locals are saying.

We found a spot in the shade for a late morning coffee but soon discovered that we were preventing a farmer from getting his harvester through to his paddock of wheat! A quick apology, and an equally quick departure!

We decided to head to Bayreuth- because we thought there was shade there in the stellplatz (from the photos) - and there was! We didn’t bother to walk the river path to the city, but instead, we thought an early morning walk tomorrow would be a better option.

  1. A beautiful church, quite a workout just getting up those steps I recon! It amazes me that buildings of such proportions were built so long ago, just using man power. They must have taken years to build, and at what cost of life. Remarkable! xx
